Welcome to our pocket video camera reviews. Pocket video cameras are a very cool and exciting category when it comes to portable video capturing devices. They’re aptly named, since they can all fit easily in your pocket.
They often also have features such as being water proof and shock proof (but not always), making them a favorite among those who like to explore nature and get their hands dirty. They’re light, they’re often affordable (But we’ll be taking a look at a high-end Kodak unit, too). They say the best camera is the one that you have with you, and it’s easy to keep one of these pocket video cameras with you.
Pocket Video Camera with EasyShare Buttons
Before we dig in too deep, let’s talk about the elephant in the room. You may have heard that Kodak is leaving the camera business, so what does that mean for anyone who buys a Kodak camera these days? Nothing, you don’t have to worry about it, they’re going to be honoring all warranties and service requests, and their EasyShare buttons will remain function for the models that have them. What it ultimately means is you can pick up an epic camera at a great price.
Now, onto the Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera. It’s hands down the most expensive camera that we’ll be featuring out of these pocket video camera reviews, and it’s hands down the best as well. If it’s a little steep, don’t worry – the rest are much more affordable. With this beast of a pocket video camera, you can record full HD with 16:9 aspect ratio, so your videos will look killer on the big screen.
Expand the storage up to 32gb using the SD slot for hours upon hours of crystal clear video. Also included is software to help you edit and share your videos. It’s fairly basic software, but it gets the job done and you don’t need to take a video editing course to understand it so that’s always a plus for consumers. There’s also an input for an external mic, because let’s face it – the mics that come on cameras are usually good enough, but that’s about it.
Best Video Camera for the Money
The GE DVX Waterproof/Shockproof 1080P Pocket Video Camera is a nice machine for the money. If the $400 price tag of the Kodak seems a bit steep, don’t worry because General Electric, of all people, have got you covered with their DVX line of pocket video cameras.
This camera is waterproof, it’s shock proof, it can take full HD videos, and it comes with a 2gb SD card so you can get started right away. There’s really not much else to say, if you’re looking for a decent pocket video camera this is a good choice.
Best Flip Video Camera to Buy
For the same price as the Kodak, this is probably a better choice. If we had to suggest one or the other, it would be the Flip UltraHD Video Camera. Based on all of the pocket video camera reviews out there, this is the most popular.
It’s the 3rd generation of the Flip video cameras, and they keep getting better! All you have to do to start capturing video is to press a big red button, it doesn’t get much easier than that and this video camera is so slim and petite that it can right right in your pocket.
Software can help you manage your files and clear room on your memory card by uploading to your computer. Simplicity and quality are the name of the game, if you want to play – click the link above to check out this excellent pocket video camera on Amazon for free shipping.
Best Pocket Video Camera to Buy
The Kodak PlaySport (Zx5) is the best value for money. Out of each camera on our list today, this one has the lowest review with 3.6 out of 5 stars. Still not terrible reviews, there’s more 5 stars than anything else, but there are some 1 stars that really drag it down.
Some of the more common issues were with (likely) earlier models freezing up, and some being dead on arrival. Luckily, Amazon is great with returns, but it shouldn’t be an issue since most of these problems were happening years ago in 2011. This is still a great camera, and also very affordable, and MOST people don’t have any issues with freezing.
If you’re able to send it back if it’s no good, maybe take a chance on this one and end up with a really great camera at a complete bargain of a price, however if having things work right away are mission-critical, for example if you need this portable video camera for a vacation and won’t have time to replace it, it’s probably wise to spend a bit more and get one you’ll be able to count on. Out of this list, we would probably have to rate this one last.
There are some amazingly reviewed cameras on this page, and some that fall a bit short sometimes. It’s a reminder that it’s important to look at reviews, but also why they got those reviews. Could it have been an issue that’s since been corrected, or should you steer clear? Also check the dates on reviews to get the full picture. In any case, there are some stellar video cameras on this page and they all serve their purpose very well – that’s why they’re here!
