How It Looks and Feels

In this portion of our Nikon Coolpix S7000 review, we’re going to examine the look and feel of the camera. With this model, the first thing you will notice as soon as you pick it up is how light it is. Weighing in at only 5.76 ounces, this model is an ideal choice for users who prefer to pack light. Besides its low overall weight, it’s surprising how small the camera itself is.

For some users, this may actually prove to be a drawback rather than a positive. All of the primary controls are located on the right side of the camera and are a bit bunched together. This can be particularly problematic for users with bigger hands. A big issue that may impact many people is accidentally covering the flash with your ring finger while holding the camera.

On the plus side, you can easily operate this camera using only one hand once you have become accustomed to its layout. In addition, the overall layout is relatively simple and doesn’t take much time to acclimate yourself to it. The dial system at the top is also extremely easy to use and clicks each time you make an adjustment.

How It Displays

This part of our Nikon Coolpix S7000 review is going to primarily focus on the display capabilities of this particular camera model. Sadly, this camera does not support a touchscreen display. That is one of the biggest downsides that we found with this particular model. With an estimated 460k dot count on the display, this model falls in the below average category compared to newer camera models.

While perhaps not being suitable for hardcore professional photographers, the display on this model should prove to be more than sufficient for the average point and shoot photographer. It does a great job displaying most colors accurately. This is especially true when you are taking shots with ample lighting.

How It Performs

This portion of our Nikon Coolpix S7000 review is going to be one of the larger sections that focuses primarily on the camera’s performance. With the Nikon Coolpix S7000, the first thing we noticed is that the camera does an excellent job shooting in wilderness settings during the day. This is likely due to the impressive 30x optical zoom capability that this camera offers.

One thing we did find is that this camera can suffer some stark performance issues when photographing in lower light settings. With an ISO range of 125 to 1,600, we expected it to perform a bit better in these types of scenarios. However, the performance impact is likely due to the relatively modest 16MP CMOS sensor.

We did find that this camera does excel in point and click shooting. With automatic face detection, this camera does a great job photographing friends and family while you are out enjoying yourself. Though the camera does lack full manual control settings, you can still adjust certain key options like white balance and sensitivity using the control knob at the top of the camera.

Another thing users may want to be aware of is that the average battery life for this camera is slightly below average. When fully charged, you can expect to take around 210 photographs before the camera will need to be recharged. Though this number may be a bit too small for serious photographers, it is more than adequate for more basic photography needs.

Does It Record Video?

In this part of our Nikon Coolpix S7000 review, we’re going to be focusing on the video capabilities of the camera. The recording capability of this camera maxes out at 1080p resolution. Due to the four-axis Hybrid VR technology, it does a great job reducing shaking when filming at close range.

However, filming at larger distances can be slightly problematic with this camera. We noticed an increase in jarring when using the zoom feature at high distances. To combat this, you may want to consider using a tripod when recording from further away.

The Bottom Line

Based on the information we covered in our Nikon Coolpix S7000 review, we believe that this camera is an ideal choice for amateur photographers and casual use. Though it does lack some higher-end features that are seen in professional models, it still has a lot going for it.

With features like 30x optical zoom and automatic face detection, this camera is an excellent pick for taking to your next vacation or family gathering.
